BEND Public safety officers at Central Oregon Community College who were criticized for investigating cases without having any authority to do so have stopped such action. Following talks with the Deschutes County District Attorney s Office, public safety officers at Central Oregon Community College will no longer attempt to undertake investigations, The Bulletin reported Thursday.[1]

District Attorney John Hummel said public safety officials do not have jurisdiction to investigate crimes the way campus police do at universities. Hummel said he was concerned with the frequency with which campus security had been undertaking investigations. College spokesman Ron Paradis said the campus officers weren t out of line that frequently, but the school has changed its policy and no longer investigates crimes or makes arrests.
