WASHINGTON Steve Stivers, who represents Ohio s 15th Congressional District in Congress, has been officially promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the Ohio National Guard at the Beightler Armory. He has served more than 30 years in the National Guard, and is one of the highest-ranking National Guard members to simultaneously serve as a member of the United States Congress.

It has been a privilege to serve with so many great people in the Ohio National Guard for the last 31 years, and I am honored to be promoted, Stivers said. The National Guard has taught me many lessons about leadership and teamwork, which have served me well in Congress and in my daily life. I look forward to continuing my service as a Brigadier General. General Stivers will serve as the Director of the Joint Staff, which is where the Army and Air National Guard come together to plan for no-notice homeland security and natural disaster missions. No-notice missions include events such as blizzards, prison riots, tornadoes, floods, and homeland security events where the National Guard is called upon to support civil authorities. General Stivers served the United States overseas during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar and Djibouti where he led 400 soldiers and contractors and is proud that each and every one returned home safely to the United States. Stivers received the Bronze Star for his leadership throughout the deployment.
