Violent weekend in Montgomery County sees 4 shot, 1 killed

Two men, an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old, were shot at a Germantown party Saturday night when a car drove by and shot into the house. About 30 people had recently been denied entrance into the party, according to police. On Friday, police investigated a double shooting in Montgomery Village that killed Wassi Young, 20, of Hyattsville, and resulted in serious injuries for another 23-year-old man. Police are investigating both shootings. [ABC7[1]]

Bradley Beal sues landlord of Rockville home

Wizards guard Bradley Beal is suing the landlord of a home he rented in Rockville, seeking about $700,000 in compensatory and punitive damages. Beal’s lawyers state the landlord asked for a security deposit that was more than two month’s rent, which Maryland law forbids. The landlord also charged Beal more than $87,000 for damages to the property, which Beal’s lawyers say were fabricated. [Washington Post[2]]

Trump s effect on D.C. area residents and workers uncertain

With President Donald Trump s promises to cut federal spending and freeze government hiring, Washington, D.C., area workers are left in limbo waiting for what the new administration might bring. The administration s opposition to the Affordable Care Act without a plan for immediate replacement leaves many feeling pessimistic about health research and hospital projects, but his proposals for increased infrastructure spending leaves some more hopeful. Others joke that frequent protesters could help the region build up an economy of protest tourism. [Washington Post[3]]

Maryland bill proposes to end child marriages

Maryland Del. Vanessa Atterbeary, D-Howard County, has put forward a bill to make 18 the legal age to marry in the state with no exceptions. Current law allows 15-year-olds to marry with parental consent and if the woman to be married is pregnant or has a child. Teens aged 16 or 17 can marry if one of those conditions are met. More than 3,100 children were married in the state between 2000 and 2014. [WTOP[4]]

Maryland Latino Caucus discusses measure to not cooperate with federal immigration agencies

The Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus will discuss a measure that would restrict state and local law enforcement agencies from working with federal immigration agencies during immigration actions in their jurisdictions. The measure would additionally prohibit law enforcement officials from stopping or arresting an individual for reasons or a suspected immigration violation. Del Marice Morales, D-Montgomery County, introduced the legislation in the Maryland House. [AP]

House of Delegates expected to broaden powers for attorney general

The Maryland House of Delegates meets Monday to discuss a resolution that would give Attorney General Brian Frosh sole discretion to sue the Trump administration to protect the state s interest as well as the health and welfare of Maryland residents. The resolution would give him the power that 41 other state attorneys general hold. [Maryland Reporter[5]]

Windy weather continues

Weather Monday starts at a high near 45 and with gusts of wind reaching up to 55 miles per hour. Winds are expected to continue through the day, according to the National Weather Service, but should slow by the evening.
