Roswell police seeking answers after suspected car thief kills himself
The video recorded by a Roswell police officer is intense. It shows 30-year-old Shayne Romero of Peralta running from police. He fired shots at the officer chasing him. Shortly after, the officer chasing Romero shot back and hit him twice. In the video, Romero is seen lying on a sidewalk where he collapsed after being shot in the arm and leg. Shortly after, Romero took the gun he used to shoot at the officer and shot himself in the head. Romero was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Many want to know why Romero was wearing a security uniform. Police tell KOB they believe Romero possessed a stolen uniform, just like the car he was driving, which is why police say they tried to arrest him in the first place. Police have not made any indication whether Romero did or did not steal that uniform.
Officers also believe there was a woman inside that car before the shootout, possibly 22-year-old Lexi Montanez of Los Lunas. Police say she ran away while cops were chasing Romero.
“We believe that she could have possibly been the female that was in the stolen car that we encountered in yesterday’s incident, said Todd Wildermuth, the Roswell Police Department public information officer. A search for Montanez is underway.
“We’re hoping that someone will give us some leads on finding her,” Wildermuth said. Officers have some questions for Montanez, including what possibly prompted Romero to shoot at an officer and take his own life.
“The importance of finding her obviously is to talk to her and further the investigation in hopes of determining what the possible motivation might have been for the male suspect to run from police, Wildermuth said.
