An ex-teacher accused of abducting a student was arrested in Calif., where the student also was found
Ex-teacher charged when student is found
A former Tennessee high school teacher accused of abducting a 15-year-old student in March was arrested Thursday in Northern California, where the teenager was also safely recovered, authorities said. Tad Cummins, 50, who disappeared in mid-March with Elizabeth Thomas, had been charged with aggravated kidnapping and having sexual contact with a minor. Police had thought Cummins was armed with two handguns, but he was arrested without incident outside Cecilville, about 60 miles south of the California-Oregon border, said Kelly Giordano, spokeswoman for the Siskiyou County Sheriff s Office.
Acting on a tip from local residents, Siskiyou County authorities found Cummins s vehicle Thursday morning and dispatched a special response team that found the pair several hours later, Giordano said. Cummins will be arraigned in Siskiyou County Superior Court before being extradited to Tennessee, she said. Jack Smith, the acting U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, said his office would add a federal charge against Cummins, for transportation of a minor across state lines with the purpose of having criminal sexual intercourse. The federal charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Gunman kills utility workers, then himself
A gunman opened fire on two utility workers Thursday in St. Louis, killing both of them before fatally shooting himself. The shooting happened about 11:15 a.m. in a residential area on the city s western edge. Police say the gunman walked up to the two male workers for Laclede Gas and began shooting, then turned the gun on himself.
We have no motive at this point in the investigation, police Capt. Mary Warnecke said. It does not appear words were exchanged. The shooting came two days after a man wanted in the slaying of a security guard gunned down three men, including a Pacific Gas & Electric employee, in unprovoked attacks on the streets of downtown Fresno, Calif. Kori Ali Muhammad, 39, was arrested shortly after the rampage. Posts on what appeared to be his Facebook page discussed wanting to kill white people.
Police described the St. Louis shooter as black and both victims as white, but there was no indication the shooting was racially motivated.
Man who killed Saints star Smith sentenced
The man who killed retired New Orleans Saints star Will Smith and wounded his wife during a traffic dispute last year was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison for manslaughter, far less than the maximum prosecutors had called for. Cardell Hayes faced up to 60 years if given consecutive maximum terms for manslaughter and attempted manslaughter. Instead, Judge Camille Buras gave him 15 years for shooting Racquel Smith in the legs, to be served at the same time. Hayes, 29, also will get a year of credit for the time served since shooting one of the city s sports heroes in April 2016.
