In case you’ve been living in a Bundt cake-shaped hole, Channel 4 will be the new home of The Great British Bake Off[1], airing its first series of the show later this year. Anyway, what with December being the season for laying on the sofa and scoffing mince pies, Digital Spy can confirm that GBBO be cooking up not one, but TWO Christmas specials this year. However, despite the rumour-mill going into overdrive that the festive helpings at the end of 2017 will be both two-hour long episodes, Channel 4 has told us, this is not true.

Back in March, Prue Leith, Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding were all confirmed to be joining Paul Hollywood following Bake Off‘s controversial jump from its original home at the BBC to Channel 4 in a multi-million pound deal.

The departure of original judge Mary Berry caused such a stir that her replacement Prue Leith was given round-the-clock security detail[2] at her home.

“On the day that they announced who the line-up was, they wanted to send a close protection officer,” Prue remembered. “I said, ‘Don’t be ridiculous, we absolutely do not need a copper standing there looking.’

“But they said, ‘No, no, no, we really must just to be on the safe side.’ What did they think is going to happen? I’m not likely to be trolled. This is a nice family show.”

Although there’s no premiere date for the brand new Bake Off just yet, Channel 4 are promising that its new episodes are “coming soon”.

A spokesperson for the channel previously confirmed to Digital Spy that series eight will definitely air in 2017[3].
